The mission of Casa de los Pobres in Tijuana, Mexico, has always been to answer the call of those in greatest need. One of our most vital ongoing efforts is sheltering and caring for a displaced community of over 130 Haitian refugees — including men, women, and children. What was once a small parcel of land used by the Sisters for catechism classes has been transformed into a sanctuary of hope: The Haitian Village of Santa Julia.

Through the grace of God and the unwavering support of our donors, the Sisters provide the tents, large protective pavilions, clean blankets, lifesaving medicine, and daily household goods that these resilient families need to survive.

Building Infrastructure for Humanitarian Relief

Providing sustainable relief to a refugee camp requires continuous infrastructure improvements. Thanks to collaborative efforts between the workers from the Casa, the City of Mercy, and volunteers, significant milestones have been achieved to bring safety and dignity to the village:

• Clean Water Access: Sinks have been installed outside, allowing the women to wash clothing and supplies comfortably rather than sitting on the damp ground.
• A Dedicated Community Kitchen: A permanent kitchen structure is complete, though the ongoing need for large appliances like a heavy-duty stove and refrigerator remains a priority.
• Electricity and Safety: Large overhead lighting has been installed to illuminate the village at night.

Overcoming Daily Challenges in the Camp

Living in a temporary shelter brings constant challenges, particularly during rainy and cold seasons. When downpours hit Tijuana, the camp faces immediate obstacles. Moisture breaks down tent zippers, and blankets get wet with no way to dry them. The Sisters continuously send new tents, tarps, and dry blankets to keep families safe and insulated.

Furthermore, access to electricity has introduced a modern dilemma: charging cell phones. With endless cables running through tents, the risk of electrical hazards during heavy rains is high. Organizations like the Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) have stepped in to provide solar and battery-powered lamps for safe interior lighting while our team works on a permanent electrical solution.

Holistic Care: Nutrition and Medical Outreach

A refugee's journey takes a heavy toll on the body. The Casa de los Pobres medical clinic, alongside partner migrant advocacy groups, provides critical medical consultations, diagnostic X-rays, and treatment for severe illnesses like Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV within the camp.
Beyond healthcare, our food security mission requires a massive daily output of essential staples. Every single day, the Casa provisions the village with:

• Rice and beans
• Fresh chicken and meat
• Canned sardines and spaghetti
• Cooking oil and vinegar

Language, Community, and How You Can Help

Language barriers can make displacement incredibly isolating for Haitian families, though many have beautifully learned to speak Spanish. To bring joy to the children, the Haitian Bridge Alliance frequently hosts community gatherings and activities, offering a vital sense of normalcy.

The Haitian Village of Santa Julia is a testament to what happens when love is put into action. However, sustaining over 130 people daily requires continuous resources. Your financial contributions allow the Sisters to buy fresh food, replace weathered tents, secure appliances, and provide specialized medical care.
